New music review: Moby, Innocents (Mute)

Moby never really recovered from his 1999 pop breakthrough Play, only released lesser albums in its wake. He has settled into a comfortable post -stardom zone, however, and this 11th album finds him exploiting many of the things he does well. His distinctive synth sound and chord progressions remain, and he puts them to good use on this guest-filled collection of hymns. Canadian goth-soul singer Cold Specks drops in for two, including the entrancing, gospel-tinged A Case for Shame. Wayne Coyne (of the Flaming Lips) takes over on unifying anthem The Perfect Life, complete with choral accompaniment. And Mark Lanegan adds gravitas to the lugubrious The Lonely Night. Throughout, Moby plays to his strengths, with simple songs designed to bring solace and lift the spirit. ***1/2
